As marketing departments and advertising agencies scramble to capitalise on the obvious opportunity that exists to communicate with target markets through Facebook, Burger King has come out and set the benchmark.
With the help of their creative agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky , Burger King has launched an application called Whopper Sacrifice. In little over a week they successfully encouraged 82,771 to download the application and offered them a free Whopper burger if they removed 10 friends.
In the end 233,906 users were sacrificed from Facebook for a free Whopper with the lost friend being informed they were worth less than the Burger King Burger. Facebook removed the application due to privacy concerns for its users but not before the campaign had received worldwide media exposure and effective communication with over 82,000 Facebook users.
What this campaign illustrates is the massive exposure a clever idea can receive through social networking websites not to mention the cost effectiveness it offers. Having your product represented in this medium is also symbolic that you are a progressive brand that is embracing new technology, something that the younger consumer definitely values.
As this medium continues to soar in popularity opportunities for your brand to be represented exist, chat to Online Now today about utilising social networking sites to market your brand online.
