Depending on the chosen SSL certificate type and level additional activities are required by the certificate provider which may include verification phone calls, the need for forms to printed filled in and faxed back or additional checking on the organisation details.

In its simplest form the email address appearing on the domain name records will receive an email requesting confirmation that the SSL certificate request is genuine and originated from the organisation. The user will need to either reply or click on a verification link in the email to approve the SSL issuance.
